Year 2/3

Year 2 and 3 Class

Welcome to Year 2 and 3

 

In Year 2 and 3, Mr Morgan and Mrs Wood are the class teachers and we will be supported by Mrs Yang, Ms Lewis and Miss Rizzo. Mrs Harding will being covering our PPA every Wednesday afternoon. 

Our PE days this term are Monday and Friday. Please come to school wearing your P.E kit on these days.  

 

English: In English we will be learning the story of The Cobbler and the Dragon. This is a traditional Polish tale. We will be focusing on description of characters, time adverbs, story structure and speech. This will be followed by writing a persuasive letter to Father Christmas.  

 

Maths: We will be learning about:

Week 1 Year 2 subtraction of 1 and 2 digit numbers

Week 1 Year 3 subtraction using the column method

Week 2 Year 2 multiplication with arrays

Week 2 Year 3 multiplication of 1 and 2 digit numbers

Week 3 multiplication patterns

Week 4 Year 2 grouping  

Week 4 Year 3 division

Week 5 division problems

Week 6 2 D shape 

Place value and estimating amounts. Comparing and ordering numbers. Measuring and addition and subtraction.

 

Science: Our topic will be The Human Body. We will be learning about  different food types and learning how different foods help the body to stay healthy. We will be finding out about our skeleton and the bones that it is made up of. Next we will learn how muscles work and undertake a muscle investigation. We will also be seeing what we can remember about our first topic Rocks, Fossils and Soils. 

 

Our topic: is Urban Pioneers. In this topic we will be learning about our local area using maps. 

 

 

PSHE: Celebrating Difference. We will be find out about different types of families and how to solve problems.

 

Music: We will be learning the songs of our Nativity.

 

Art and DT: Our art will focus on the work of Lowry

Year 2 and 3 Timetable

Spelling Punctuation and Grammar

In spelling children will revisit some of the spelling patterns from year 1 and 2 start to learn year 2 and 3 spelling patterns in addition to tricky words.

 

The list of spellings for this term can be found  below.

Children will be given logins for Spelling Shed where they will be able to practise their spellings using the activities on the Spelling Shed site.

Homework
 

Online maths and spelling is set weekly. It is completed online (login details found in reading record books).

 

Reading

In Year 2 and 3 children should read daily using the book set in school. Children will take home a book on Thursday to read over the weekend. Please ensure this book is brought into school on Monday for the guided reading sessions that will take place throughout the week. In addition to having a guided reading book, children will also have their own book to read during our 'Drop Everything and Read' sessions every morning. This is a book they will choose themselves. The children will be helped to do this initially until they become more confident.  Please encourage them to change their book and you can also help them to choose during the Drop and Read sessions every Wednesday.   

 

Spelling
Spelling Shed - children will have access to Spelling Shed’s online platform where weekly spelling lists, set by the class teacher, can be found as well as games and activities to learn the spellings learnt in class. 

 

Maths
DoodleMaths – pupils are set 2 assignments each week to complete, based on in-class learning that week and the learning they will complete the following week. They should also do additional practice to stay in the green zone. The recommendation is 10 minutes 3/4 days a week.

Doodle Tables- By the end of Year 2, pupils are expected to know their 2s, 5s and 10 times tables. They should also be able to count in 3s. This will help them to know all times tables by Year 4.  

By the end of Year 3, pupils are expected to know there 3s, 4s and 8's and in addition 2's, 5's and 10's from year 2.
