Together on a Learning Adventure

Willow - Year 4

Welcome to Willow Class

In Year 4, Ms Candlish and Mrs Lunn are the class teachers and we are supported by the brilliant Mrs Garrard and marvellous Miss Sloan. Mrs Lunn teaches on Tuesdays and Mrs Garrard on Thursday afternoons.

Our PE days for term 5 are Monday and Wednesday. Please come to school wearing your kit on these days. It is very useful to also have a spare change of clothes on wet or muddy days.

This term's Forest School session will be held on Wednesday 17th May. Please ensure that you have wellies and a coat in school on that day (whatever the weather) and come dressed in comfortable clothes, with long sleeves and trousers.

Topic

Our topic for terms 5 and 6 is Ancient Civilisations. This project teaches children about the history of three of the world’s first ancient civilisations: ancient Sumer, ancient Egypt and the Indus Valley civilisation. Children will learn about the rise, life, achievements and eventual end of each civilisation.

The topic will also flow through our wider curriculum as we explore:

  • In English, we will be covering portal stories (fiction), setting descriptions and information texts.
  • In DT we'll learn about the 3-D representation of the human form, including statues, statuettes and figurines. We'll study examples from ancient civilisations, and use our clay skills to create a Sumer-style figurine.
  • In Art, we'll learn about the features of Islamic art and make geometric patterns and motifs on paper, with fabric and in clay.
  • In Science we'll study electrical appliances and safety and construct simple series circuits and name their parts and functions, including switches, wires and cells. We'll investigate electrical conductors and insulators and identify common features of conductors, combining our learning to design and make a nightlight.

For more information about each topic, pupils will be able to access knowledge organsiers in class.

Our class novel is Secrets of a Sun King by Emma Carroll

In Maths, we will continue to follow the White Rose scheme.

In term 5 we will be covering the following areas:

  • Time

In term 6 we will be covering the following areas:

  • Shapes
