Together on a Learning Adventure

Willow - Year 4

Welcome to Willow Class

In Year 4, Ms Candlish is the class teacher and we are supported by the brilliant Mrs Garrard and marvellous Miss Sloan. The class is taught on Tuesdays by fabulous Mrs Lunn.

Our PE days this term are Wednesday and Thursday. Please come to school wearing your kit on these days.

Our topic for term 1 is Interconnected World, in which we'll learn about compass points and four and six-figure grid references. We'll learn about the tropics and the countries, climates and culture of North and South America. Then we'll move on to identify physical features in the United Kingdom and learn about the National Rail and canal networks.

Please find the unit knowledge organiser below.

The topic will also flow through our wider curriculum as we explore:

  • In English, we will be covering stories with a real-life setting, and information texts based around our science.
  • In Art we'll learn about colour theory by studying the colour wheel and colour mixing. It includes an exploration of tertiary colours, warm and cool colours, complementary colours and analogous colours, and how artists use colour in their artwork.
  • In Geography we will explore map skills, grid references, different climate zones and human and natural geographical features closer to home.
  • In Science we'll learn about the human digestive system. We'll explore the main parts, starting with the mouth and teeth, identifying teeth types and their functions. We'll link this learning to animals' diets and construct food chains to show the flow of energy.
  • In DT we look at food decay and preservation, discovering key inventions in food preservation and packaging, before then making examples. The children prepare, package and evaluate a healthy snack.

For more information about each topic you can find the knowledge organisers below.

Our class novel is How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell

In Maths, we will continue to follow the White Rose scheme. In terms 1 and 2 we will be covering the following areas.

  • Place value
  • Addition and subtraction
  • Measurement (area)
  • Multiplication and division

If you wish to follow White Rose at home, you can see the yearly overview, small steps and individual lesson resources here.

In addition to daily reading, spelling and times tables practise, your child will bring home one piece of work that will support their learning across the curriculum. This will be set on a Wednesday to be returned each Monday.
